For over Ten years I have thought about the day I would step foot to walk a through hike on The Appalachian Trail.
I guess you can say it has been an obsession to be able to walk the AT and to finally be able to say I did it. There are so many reasons why I want to accomplish this and feel like most others feel the same. From waiting to find themselves, to a sense of accomplishment, and to just letting go of technology. I know it won’t be easy there will be times when I want to give up and it will test my straight my will power to keep going.
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately. To front only the essential facts of life. And to see if I could not learn what it had to teach and not. When I came to die, discover that I had not lived”. ~Henry David Thoreau~
The Appalachian Trail is said to be the longest ‘hiking only’ trail in the world, the A.T. covers 2175 miles, some of 14 states, 8 national forest, 6 national parks and numerous state parks. Conceived by Forester Benton MacKaye and taking ten years to complete. The A.T. officially opened in 1937.
In this time I have read, listen, watched and took notes on what I need to prepare myself for my journey. You may wonder why 2028 and like others it’s because I will be able to dedicate the time needed to accomplish this task. I will be fully retired and able to do the trail not needing to be at work.
I hope to have two of my children (Cody, Madelyn ) and my husband David walking beside me every step of the way. I know that they may not want or won’t be able to take on this huge commitment. I also know that I may have to take on this adventure on my own but know that I will have a support team at home cheering me on the whole way. My oldest Sophia will be my mail person making sure all my resupplies make it to my stopping points along the trail.
“You Give What You Get” ~Aimee Gulotuna
This is my quote that I try to live by daily. To me it means by giving your all you will always expect to get nothing but what you put into it. You’ll never be disappointed because you can’t expect more then what you give.
Please continue to follow me on the A.T and come back for my updated post on my journey. As always I hope to inspirer others to fallow their dreams one project at a time.
